Mastoiditis—a serious bone infection that ear infections can cause | The Survival DoctorMastoiditis

That little bony protrusion behind your ear is called the mastoid sinus. If that gets infected, it can be serious. Sometimes, the bone even has to be opened up surgically to drain the infection and cure the problem. So if that area is red, swollen, or tender, start antibiotics right away, and keep them up for two weeks.

Okay, I hope this helps. But remember, everyone is different. If you or your loved one has ear pain, see a doctor. These guidelines are for general information and not to take the place of your doctor’s advice geared individually for you.

And what about you? Have you or a loved one ever had an ear infection? Did your doctor ever advise the wait and see? Did it go away on its own? What did you do for the symptoms?
